Stikine MLA announces 7th annual youth contest, ‘Score One for Democracy’

February 14, 2017 (Hazelton, BC) – Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson is pleased to launch his 7th annual youth contest, with this year’s theme ‘Score One for Democracy’.

“Contest followers will recall in the past we’ve partnered with Dan Hamhuis and the Canucks. I’d like to thank Dan for supporting young people in many ways including through this contest over the last six years,” said Donaldson. “As a locally-raised NHL veteran, we wanted to keep Dan involved after he was traded to the Dallas Stars. So this year’s winner will receive two tickets to the March 16, 2017 Vancouver Canucks vs. Dallas Stars game, two return Central Mountain Air tickets, and accommodation.”

As in previous years, contest entrants are asked to write a short essay on a particular topic.

“This year, because of the upcoming provincial election, we are asking young people to reflect on the following question: There is a provincial election May 9. As a young person, what message would you like to tell politicians about what matters to you?” said Donaldson.

The 500-word essay submissions must be received by 3:00 pm on Wednesday March 1, 2017, and will be judged by a community panel. Submissions can be mailed, emailed or dropped off in person to the MLA constituency offices.

“This is the seventh year we have run a contest for youth from our MLA offices in Stikine,” said Donaldson. “Previous themes include Don’t Let Gangs Score, Don’t Let Cyber Bullies Score, Score One for Mental Wellness and Score One for Solutions.”

This year’s contest sponsors are Central Mountain Air, Bulkley Valley Credit Union, Gitxsan Government Commission, Moose FM, the Interior News, and the Smithers RCMP Detachment.
